Nia is an expressive body-mind-spirit movement program that offers an artistic and innovative approach to fitness and healing. Blending aspects of Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts, Nia provides a variety of movement dynamics to create an experience that involves your whole body, as well as your spirit. The stillness and concentration of Tai Chi, the dynamic poses of Yoga, the explosive power of Tae Kwon Do, and the grace and spontaneity of Modern and Ethnic dance make it possible to create a whole new sense of well being! The use of eclectic, rich music, guided imagery, powerful kinesthetic cues, and heart-felt joy add to the full experience of a Nia class.
Nia classes are generally offered as group exercise classes that are one hour long. You can also enjoy Nia in workshops and week-long trainings. Regular attendance at a Nia class can result in weight loss, cardiovascular conditioning, stress relief, body integration, pain management, improved self-image, social connection, and much, much more. Most people agree that Nia is fun!!! This keeps them coming back for more. Students of Nia enjoy the experience so much it is easy to make it part of their regular schedule. Beyond the fun of Nia, there is a more profound experience that comes from moving in accord with The Body's Way.
The Body's Way is Nia's method of using the body in accord with its specific design and structure. We use the science of the body as a map to guide us in becoming fit, experiencing personal growth, and creating a lifestyle practice that truly supports our well-being. We all start out with the same kind of body parts, however, each body functions differently. The Body's Way works with the inherent, natural differences of every body, making it possible for people of all ages and levels of conditioning to participate in a Nia class.
Nia was launched by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas in California in 1983. Tired of the injuries and discomfort brought on by traditional aerobic dance at the time, they were determined to find another way. By adopting systemic grounded movement, they were able to safely remove their shoes and continue to achieve their fitness goals.
Since its birth, Nia has grown to include over 2000 active teachers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe, Australia and beyond. Classes can be found in health clubs, yoga centers, healing clinics, universities, community centers, churches, and private settings.
The Nia Technique offers five levels of Training beyond taking a class, for personal growth and professional development. The Trainings are delivered by a select group of Master Teachers known as Nia Trainers. Holly Curtis is one of the select group of Nia Trainers. Intensives are offered throughout the world, including Europe, Africa, Canada, Australia, Asia, China, and the United States. A full listing of all the Trainings offered can be found at www.NiaNow.com.
Fashioned after the martial arts, each level is defined as White Belt, Green Belt, Blue Belt, Brown Belt, and Black Belt. Each Belt level builds upon the prior training, adding skills and knowledge to deepen your practice further and enrich your life with intention.
